Ian flies the world
PLEASE READ THIS FIRST:
From 1985 to 1997, I lived a life which had almost enough time for me to write about my thoughts with every flight I took. Some time early in 1997, I took this content and chopped it up into web-sized pieces for my personal site at GeoCities, where it was reasonably well regarded. Late in 1997, my position at work was made redundant, so I spent most of 1998 and 1999 driving and flying the length of the North Island of New Zealand before finally settling in Wellington in July 1999. This site of travel reflections never recovered, but it is now being moved to my server at baptism.co.nz. This is happening gradually, so don't be too surprised at odd, obsolete banners advertising GeoCities or the Internet Link Exchange. In those days, GeoCities was an independent company not owned by Yahoo! and the Link Exchange was not owned by a Redmond company. Bear with me as I update this. December 9th 2002. If this date is more than 3 months old, you'll know I've given up on this task. Since then, a lot has happened...other sites are being processed and some of this one is being updated now, in February 2007. As I look back at the HTML code on this site, it's close to a miracle that any of the pages are rendered. But the code may be revised at some point in the future.
On these pages, you will find my rambling notes and thoughts from almost two hundred
thousand miles of flights taken from the start of
1985 through to
1997.
It's taken me a while to get this site the way I like it, with flags of all the places
I have visited to brighten up the site. At last, we have a few
maps showing where I have been.
Of course, there's still plenty of room for improvement, and I will be adding more links,
maps and photographs in the future.
If you are looking for a multimedia extravaganza here, you will be disappointed. You
won't find any automatic midi files churning out songs you've never heard before and you
won't be baffled by frames everywhere you turn. If you want to know where you will go
when you click on a link, you can find out without being frustrated by JavaScript
telling you it's an active link. However, if you want to know of some of the joys and
sorrows of world travel, the excitement and the boredom, then this is the place for you.
Enjoy your visit and come back soon!
Scattered through the pages and the text, you'll find old pictures of the whole family.
Don't miss Matthew's description of Melbourne. Matthew is much older and wiser by now, of course.
I have finished writing about our trip back to England at the end of
1995 and
back to Vanuatu in 1996.
However, I still haven't written about the huge number of flights I took in
1998 and 1999. Mostly they were between Napier and Auckland and Wellington,
though there were some slightly further afield.

On our trip to Melbourne, our son Matthew
wrote a diary of what we did each day. I have reproduced it here.
